NEW YORK — A dedicated group of Howard Beach volunteers has officially launched “Senior Strides,” a new communitybased initiative designed to provide essential transportation and errand assistance to the neighborhood’s growing elderly population. The program, which began its operations on August 1, 2026, aims to enhance the quality of life for seniors, promote independence, and further strengthen the tightknit bonds within the Howard Beach community. This grassroots effort addresses a significant need identified by local civic groups. Addressing Gaps in Senior Support Services “Senior Strides” was conceived after a series of community forums revealed a pressing need for accessible support services for seniors who may struggle with transportation or daily tasks. Many elderly residents, particularly those without nearby family, face challenges accessing medical appointments, grocery stores, or social activities. The program offers free, volunteerdriven rides and assistance with light errands, such as prescription pickups or postal services. “Our seniors built this community, and it's our turn to ensure they live with dignity and ease,” stated Eleanor Peterson, cofounder and lead organizer of Senior Strides, speaking at the program's inaugural event at the Howard Beach Senior Center. Peterson, a retired nurse, emphasized that the program is not just about logistics, but about fostering connection and preventing isolation. She has personally seen the need for such services in her 30 years as a resident. The program has already recruited over 30 volunteers, ranging from high school students to other retirees, all eager to contribute their time and vehicles. Each volunteer undergoes a background check and a brief training session on assisting seniors. The initiative is actively seeking more volunteers to expand its reach and meet growing demand. Community Partnerships and Funding Senior Strides operates through a collaborative model, partnering with several local organizations. The Howard Beach Senior Center provides a central hub for scheduling and coordination, while the Howard Beach Civic Association offers administrative support and outreach. Initial funding for materials, insurance, and volunteer training came from a combination of local fundraising events and a grant from the Queens Community Foundation. “This is an excellent example of how our community comes together to identify a need and build a solution,” commented Robert Johnson, president of the Howard Beach Civic Association. Johnson highlighted the Civic Association’s pride in supporting such a vital initiative. He noted that the initial fundraising drive exceeded its goal by 15%, demonstrating strong community backing. Local businesses on Cross Bay Boulevard have also shown their support, offering discounts on gas for volunteers and contributing to a small emergency fund for unexpected senior needs. Businesses like G&G Pharmacy and King Souvlaki have been particularly generous. This widespread support underscores the value Howard Beach places on its senior population. Impact on Senior Independence and Wellbeing The immediate impact of Senior Strides is already evident, with early participants reporting a significant improvement in their ability to manage daily life. The service has enabled seniors to attend doctor’s appointments more regularly, maintain social connections, and reduce feelings of isolation. This program promotes an active and engaged senior lifestyle. “It’s been a lifeline,” shared 82yearold Margaret Donovan, a resident of 156th Avenue who recently used the service for a grocery run. “I don’t drive anymore, and getting to the store was becoming impossible. Now, a friendly face picks me up, helps me shop, and brings me home. It’s truly wonderful.” Donovan noted the convenience of scheduling through the Senior Center hotline. She can now enjoy her weekly bridge club meetings again. Beyond practical assistance, the program fosters intergenerational connections and strengthens neighborhood ties. Volunteers often spend a few extra minutes chatting with seniors, providing valuable social interaction. These small gestures build trust and a sense of belonging, which are crucial for mental health. Expanding Reach and Future Aspirations Senior Strides aims to expand its services to include light home maintenance assistance and tech support for seniors navigating digital devices. The organizers are currently exploring partnerships with local trade schools and technology clubs to recruit skilled volunteers for these additional offerings. This expansion will meet a wider range of senior needs. Eleanor Peterson expressed optimism about the program's future. “The enthusiasm from both volunteers and seniors has been overwhelming. We hope to serve every senior in Howard Beach who needs us, and perhaps inspire similar programs in neighboring Queens communities.” Peterson indicated that they are already receiving inquiries from other community gr
